Partitioning is a process of dividing the large chunk of hard disk into smaller sections. Drives can also be partitioned to break down a disk making it manageable for data storage, or to run separate operating systems on different partitions of the same disk. Partitioning a drive into smaller segments increases system performance by reducing the work computer has to do to index and find files.

Partitioning can be performed on a new or reformatted disk. Partitions can be formatted with different file systems like FAT, NTFS, etc which manages and stores the files and folders on the drive. FAT (File Allocation Table) is computer file system architecture originally designed for small disks and simple folder structures. It is widely used in computer systems and in majority of flash memory cards. The FAT file system provides has maintenance utilities like disk checker that repairs and retrieves corrupted data, that is when the data becomes inaccessible which hinders the  successful transmission, retrieval, or processing of the data. There are three types of FAT; they are FAT 12, FAT 16, and FAT 32. A partition formatted with FAT file system, FAT describes what clusters is used by which files.

Partitions are created for user’s convenience however, these partitions may be corrupted.
